A walk around the Old Town is a must when visiting Elbląg. This historic city center may surprise you, because the Old Town is really… young. Apart from the surviving monuments, most of the tenement houses are the result of reconstruction carried out since the 1980s. Retroversion became the key word for the reconstruction of the Old Town in Elbląg.

New tenement houses are built on the contours of the foundations of old tenement houses and refer to their shapes. New-old tenement houses restore the atmosphere of the old town and create a beautiful background for the surviving and wonderfully restored monuments of architecture.

Located in the Old Town, the Cathedral of St. St. Nicholas is the most important sacral building in the city, as well as the tallest church in Poland on the right bank of the Vistula River. Since 2015, a viewpoint on the tower of the cathedral has been made available to tourists, from which there is a beautiful view of the panorama of the city and the surrounding area. At the other end of the Old Market Square there is the Market Gate - once surrounded by defensive walls, today it serves as a vantage point.

The Galeria EL Art Center is located in a former post-Dominican church. In 2011, the interior of the Gallery gained a modern, two-level glass gallery where exhibitions are held. The combination of modern exhibits and a glass gallery with the historic interior of the Gothic temple is unusual. The contemporary offer of the Gallery is very diverse, from typical exhibitions, through performances, concerts, festivals, to performances and workshops.

The unusual appearance of the Elbląg Library is related to the past of the building in which this institution is located. On March 15, 1242, the Elbląg city council and the national master issued a foundation act for the building. Originally, it served as a shelter for the elderly and the sick, and then - as a hospital. The former post-hospital complex was burnt down during the war in 1945. The building, rebuilt in the 1970s, houses the Elbląg Library.

The library has one of the most valuable collections of old prints. After the war, they were transported to Toruń, where they became part of the collection of the university library. In recent years, valuable collections, which are part of the former Elbląg Library, have returned to their place. It is worth visiting the library in Elbląg to get acquainted with the interesting collections gathered in the Regional Laboratory. The library in Elbląg is also known for its interesting cultural initiatives: meetings, exhibitions, etc.
